Under the streets
Brakpan's sewers are being rebuilt to carry more than they were laid for
What the City's own plans say about the pipes under the town, and what a full sewer does to the drains on your side of the fence.
In Leachville, the City of Ekurhuleni plans to swap the sewer pipes that run behind the houses for bigger ones. Its 2022 heritage application for a new pump station says the 110 mm midblock pipes "will also be replaced with 160mm pipes to accommodate higher flows", and the new station beside the old one is designed to move 88 litres a second. A 110 mm pipe is the size most houses use for their own drain, so a municipal line serving a whole row of homes was no wider than one home's outlet.
Leachville is not the only name on the list. When the City took its draft plans to Brakpan in April 2025, the ward priorities included upgrades to the sewage pump stations in Minnebron and in Dalpark 1 and a sewer upgrade in Abbie Nyalunga Street. The draft capital budget named a Brakpan central sewer upgrade and sewers for Withok, Dalpark and Leachville, and sewer blockages were one of the three problems the City listed for the area.
Until that work is done, the old pipes carry on at their limit, and a sewer that runs full has nowhere to go but back up the drains that feed it. In 2021 the Brakpan Herald reported sewage spilling near Hofmeyer Street in Brenthurst, and the City said illegal connections had to be removed before the pump station there could work properly. When a pump stops or a main chokes, every drain upstream of it fills from the bottom.
1. An ordinary day. The City's sewer runs part full and the house drain empties between flushes.
2. The street sewer runs full. A stopped pump or a choked main fills it, and the sewage backs up the pipe into your yard.
3. Out at the lowest opening. A gully set 100 mm above the paving overflows outside, before a shower or toilet indoors can.
On one property, sewage rising from the street leaves by the lowest open fitting it can reach. Ekurhuleni's Water Services By-law plans for exactly that. A gully must be kerbed, or raised at least 100 mm above the ground around it, and it exists to let sewage overflow outside. Pave the yard up to the gully's rim, or put a shower on a floor lower than it, and the overflow chooses the inside of the house instead.
None of the street side is yours to fix. The by-law makes the owner responsible for the drainage up to the point where it joins the City's connecting sewer, and the City for what lies beyond. What you control is where the sewage comes out when the City's side fails, and whether anyone can look into your drain without digging, through an inspection eye that has not been tiled or paved over.
Find your gully and the inspection eye nearest the boundary this week. If the gully sits level with the paving or the eye has been paved over, have them sorted before the next sewer backup, not during it.
Where these facts come from
Three promises, printed where you can hold us to them
They answer the three complaints that come up most in reviews of plumbers around Brakpan.
The phone price is the paper price
You hear the visit charge before anyone drives out. Once the fault is found, the job is priced in writing, and if the work grows, a new written price comes before the extra work does.
What goes in is named on the invoice
Each part is listed as new, with its make and size, and the part that came out is shown to you. Where the law asks for a certificate, the quote says so and names who signs it.
A time on the phone, and a call if it slips
You get a time when you book. If the plumber is going to be late, you hear it from the plumber, before the time has passed, not from the clock.
What happens once you ask for a plumber
The same four steps for a dripping tap as for a burst geyser.
-
Send the coupon
Say what is happening and the suburb. A plumber phones you back, and if water is pouring out, that call starts with which valve to close.
-
Hear the charge and a time
Before anyone drives out you hear the visit charge, what it covers and when the plumber can be there. Likely parts are talked through, so they come on the van.
-
The fault shown, the price written
The cause is shown to you first. The price for the job is written down before work starts, and you decide whether to go ahead.
-
Tested while you watch
The drain runs, the tap holds and the meter stands still in front of you. The invoice lists each part and the labour, ready for an insurer.
Questions Brakpan homeowners ask before they book
The money question comes first, since most callers start there.
How much does a plumber in Brakpan charge to come out?
No figure is printed on this site. The visit charge is said on the phone before anyone drives out, together with what it covers and anything that changes it, such as a call late at night. The repair is priced separately, in writing, once the fault has been found.
If I decide not to go ahead, what happens to the visit charge?
You hear on the phone what the visit charge covers and whether it is credited against the job if you go ahead, so the answer is settled before the plumber leaves for your address, not argued about at the door.
Will you tell me if the fault is on the City's side?
Yes. If the trouble is in the City's sewer, its water main or its meter, you are told so and given the City's fault line, 0860 543 000, instead of a quote for work that would not fix it.
How do I check that a plumber is registered?
Ask for the registration number when you book, then look it up yourself: the Plumbing Industry Registration Board has a verify a plumber page, and gas work is checked on the SAQCC Gas register. Do it before the work starts, not after.
Which suburbs do you come out to?
Brakpan Central and North, Dalpark, Dalview, Brenthurst, Minnebron, Sunair Park, Leachville, Kenleaf, Helderwyk, Tsakane and the rest of the index at the foot of this page. If yours is close but not listed, ask on the coupon.
What should I have ready when I book?
The suburb, what you can see or hear, when it started, and whether water is still running. For a geyser, the make and size on its label help the plumber bring the right part on the first visit.
Do I get the old part back?
The part that came out is shown to you and stays with you unless you ask for it to be taken away. It is your record of what failed, and it is useful if an insurer asks.
What will the invoice show for an insurance claim?
The fault that was found, each part with its make and size, the labour, and the date of the work. Insurers set their own rules, so ask yours what it needs before the work starts and mention it when you book.
Send the details and a plumber phones you back
A name and a number are enough. You hear the visit charge on that call, before anyone drives out.
